Theth sits deep in the Albanian Alps, and almost everyone reaches it the same way: up the mountain road from Shkodër. It is a straightforward trip in summer and a genuinely spectacular drive, but the route is seasonal and the timings surprise people — the distance is short, the road is slow. Here is how to get there, and how to get around once you arrive. For the full practical rundown see our getting-here guide.
The short version
- Base yourself in Shkodër the night before — it is the gateway city and where the transfers leave.
- Shkodër to Theth is roughly 70 km but takes about 2.5–3.5 hours — the mountain road is winding, not far.
- Go by furgon (shared minibus) or a private car/transfer; both run mainly in the summer season, roughly late spring to autumn.
- In winter the pass can be closed by snow — always check current road status before travelling off-season.
From Shkodër: the furgon over the pass
The classic way in is a furgon — the shared minibuses that are the backbone of Albanian mountain transport. They typically depart Shkodër in the morning, fill up, and climb the road over the pass into the Theth valley, dropping you in the village. Guesthouses will often arrange a seat or a door-to-door transfer, which is the easiest option and worth asking about when you book.
The road climbs over the high Qafa e Thorës pass — around 1,700 m, one of the highest points in Albania reachable by car — before dropping into the valley. It was fully paved in 2021 — the last stretch of rough dirt track was finally asphalted — but it stays a narrow, switchbacking mountain route, which is why the ~70 km still takes a few hours rather than one. If you are driving your own car, take it slowly and expect to meet oncoming vehicles on tight bends.
Coming via Tirana airport
Most international visitors fly into Tirana (Nënë Tereza airport). From there:
- Travel Tirana to Shkodër first — about 1.5–2 hours by bus, furgon or car.
- Then continue Shkodër to Theth as above.
It is generally too much to do the whole airport-to-Theth journey comfortably in one push, so most travellers overnight in Shkodër and head up to the mountains the next morning.
Arriving on foot: the Valbonë–Theth crossing
Many hikers reach Theth the other way — on foot from Valbonë, over the Valbona Pass, one of the Balkans' great day hikes. This is usually done as part of the wider loop that also uses the Koman Lake ferry (Fierzë–Koman) to link the valleys. If you are walking the Peaks of the Balkans or the Valbonë–Theth crossing, you may arrive in Theth without ever taking the Shkodër road.
Getting around Theth
Once you are in the valley, you get around on foot. Theth is a small, spread-out village and its sights — the stone church, Grunas Waterfall, the Blue Eye down the valley — are reached on hiking trails from the guesthouses. There is no local bus network; bring good footwear and plan your days around walking distances.
When to go
The Theth road and its guesthouses operate mainly in the warmer months — roughly June to September is the reliable window, with the shoulder months either side depending on the weather and how much snow lingers on the pass. Trails are clearest and guesthouses fully open in high summer. Outside the season, access and services can be limited or closed, so plan a summer visit unless you have specifically arranged winter transport and lodging. See our practical info for costs, cash and connectivity in the valley.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get to Theth?
Almost everyone reaches Theth by the mountain road from Shkodër — about 70 km but roughly 2.5–3.5 hours by furgon (shared minibus) or car, as the road is winding. Most run in the summer season.
Is the road to Theth paved?
Yes. The mountain road from Shkodër (SH21) was fully paved in 2021, when the last rough section of dirt track was asphalted; all ~70 km are now sealed. It remains a narrow, steep, switchbacking route, so the drive is still slow — but it is no longer the rocky off-road adventure it once was.
Is the road to Theth open in winter?
Not reliably. The road is typically open from around late spring to autumn; in winter the pass can be blocked by snow and most guesthouses close, so the practical season is roughly June to September.
How do you get to Theth from Tirana airport?
Travel Tirana to Shkodër first (about 1.5–2 hours), then continue Shkodër to Theth. It is usually too much in one push, so most travellers overnight in Shkodër.
