Getting Here in Theth

Getting Here

Theth sits deep in the Albanian Alps -- reached over a winding mountain road from Shkodër, in season.

From Shkodër

Almost everyone reaches Theth from Shkodër, about 70 km away. The drive takes roughly 2.5–3.5 hours over a winding mountain road that climbs over a high pass before dropping into the Theth valley. In the warmer months, daily furgons (shared minibuses/vans) run the route; you can also drive or arrange a private transfer. Ask your guesthouse to help book a seat.

By Air

The nearest airport is Tirana International (TIA), roughly 1.5–2 hours from Shkodër. From the airport, head to Shkodër first — by bus, transfer or car — and continue up to Theth from there. There is no airport, railway or direct city transport into the valley itself.

On Foot over the Pass

Many hikers arrive the hard way — on the classic Valbonë–Theth crossing, a roughly 6–8 hour walk over the Valbona Pass from the neighbouring Valbonë valley. It is one of the Balkans' great day hikes, and a memorable way to reach the village without a road at all.

When the Road is Open

The mountain road is generally passable from around late spring to autumn, and the practical season for visiting is roughly June to September, when the trails are clear and guesthouses are open. In winter, snow can close the road and most of the valley shuts down.

Getting Around

Once you're in Theth, you get around on foot. Hiking trails link the church, the waterfalls and the hamlets across the valley.

On Foot

Walking is how you explore Theth. Marked trails connect the village to Grunas Waterfall, the Blue Eye, and the hamlets further up the valley.

Guides & Transfers

Guesthouses can arrange local guides for the longer routes and help organise transfers to the trailheads or back to Shkodër.

By Car

A car gets you up the mountain road and between trailheads, but it is not needed within the village. Drive carefully — the road is narrow, winding and steep.

Vehicle Rentals

A car is useful for reaching Theth and exploring the wider region, but not for the village itself. Pick one up in Tirana or Shkodër before heading into the mountains, and choose something that handles a rough road.

Before You Go: Get Connected

Mobile signal is patchy in the mountains, so sort your data before you leave the city -- for offline maps, trail routes, and messaging your guesthouse. An Albania eSIM activated before departure connects automatically when you land, and Albania is not in the EU, so home roaming can be expensive.
