Theth's easiest signature walk
Grunas Waterfall is the walk most visitors do first in Theth — a tall, narrow cascade that drops roughly 25–30 metres down a mossy rock face into a cold pool, a short, well-marked hike above the village. It is fed by mountain streams that gather above the Grunas hamlet and fall over the lip of the canyon, and it is the gentlest of the valley's signature outings — a perfect first day in the Albanian Alps.
Both the waterfall and the gorge below it have been a protected natural monument of Albania since 2002, within Theth National Park. The pool drains into the Shala river at the head of the Grunas Canyon — a gorge roughly 2 km long and up to 60 m deep, narrowing to just 2–3 metres in places — carved into the western slope of the valley and easy to combine with the falls.
The hike
- Distance: the waterfall sits about 2 km south of the village centre.
- Trail: a signed trail climbs from the village toward the Grunas hamlet, over steadily rising ground.
- Time: roughly 45 minutes to an hour each way.
- Difficulty: the easiest of Theth's signature walks — a moderate uphill, well marked. Wear proper shoes.
It is open access and free, and because it is short it fits easily into a first afternoon or a half-day. Combine it with the Grunas Canyon just below for a fuller outing, and save the longer walks — the Blue Eye and the Valbonë–Theth crossing — for a full day.
