Theth is a walking village. There is no local transport in the valley, and its best sights — waterfalls, a karst spring, a high mountain pass — are all reached on foot from the guesthouses. The trails range from a flat stroll across the meadow to a full day over a high mountain col, so there is something for every pair of legs. Here are the walks worth building your days around. For how to reach the valley in the first place, see our how-to-get-to-Theth guide.
Grunas Waterfall — the easy classic
The Grunas Waterfall is the first walk most visitors do, and the best short one. A signed trail climbs from the village toward the Grunas hamlet and up to the falls, which drop roughly 25–30 metres down a mossy rock face into a cold pool. Reckon on about 45 minutes to an hour each way over rising ground — wear proper shoes. Many people combine it with the Grunas Canyon cut into the rock just below. It sits about 2 km south of the village centre.
The Blue Eye of Theth — a day by the gorge
Theth has its own Blue Eye — a karst spring on the Black River drainage near the hamlet of Nderlysa, and a genuinely different place from the better-known Blue Eye near Sarandë in southern Albania. The intensely blue pool is fed by a little waterfall, and the forested walk in through the gorge is part of the appeal. Most people drive or take a shared minibus down to the Nderlysa trailhead (about 7 km, ~€5 by minibus), then walk the final 40–50 minutes — roughly 2 km, steep in places — up the gorge to the pool; carry water and wear sturdy shoes. With the transfer it's a relaxed half-day. Some hardy visitors brave a swim in the icy water.
The Valbona Pass — the great crossing
The Valbona Pass is the region's signature hike and part of the Peaks of the Balkans route. The full Valbonë–Theth crossing typically takes around 6–8 hours over the pass, climbing high above the treeline before dropping into the far valley. Many walk it as a one-way traverse — arriving in Theth on foot from Valbonë, or leaving that way — often linked with the Koman Lake ferry between the valleys. It is a long, exposed mountain day: start early, check the weather, and go with good footwear and enough water.
Easy strolls in the village
Not every day has to be a big one. The stone Theth Church and the historic Lock-in Tower both sit in the village centre on flat, easy paths, and make for a gentle afternoon wander across the valley floor with the peaks all around.
