How long you need in Theth depends on how much you want to hike. Because getting in is a slow mountain journey, a rushed visit rarely pays off. As a rough guide: 2–3 days is the sweet spot for the village and its main walks, and 3–4 days or more if you want to add the famous Valbonë–Theth crossing. Here's an honest planner. For a ready-made plan, see our itinerary or the 5-day Albanian Alps itinerary; for the journey in, our how-to-get-to-Theth guide.
At a glance
| Trip length | Best for |
|---|---|
| One day | Not really — the slow mountain journey barely leaves time to see it |
| 2–3 days (sweet spot) | The village, Grunas Waterfall, the Blue Eye and easy valley walks |
| 3–4 days+ | Add the famous Valbonë–Theth pass crossing |
| A week+ | The full Peaks of the Balkans cross-border trek |
Is one day enough?
Honestly, not really. Theth is a winding 2.5–3.5 hour drive from Shkodër, so a single day means most of it is spent travelling. If you truly only have one day, you'd manage the village, the stone church and the easy Grunas Waterfall walk — but you'd be leaving as soon as you arrived. Plan to stay at least one night.
Two to three days: the sweet spot
The right length for most visitors — enough to settle in and do the valley's signature walks:
- Grunas Waterfall — the easy first walk.
- The Blue Eye of Theth — a longer gorge hike, a full day out.
- Time for long guesthouse dinners and to soak up the valley.
Two nights is a comfortable minimum; three lets you slow right down.
Three to four days (or more): add the Valbona crossing
If you want the marquee hike, build in the Valbonë–Theth crossing over the Valbona Pass — a 6–8 hour day on its own, often walked as a one-way traverse. Many hikers stay a night in Theth and a night in Valbonë, linking the two with the Koman Lake ferry, so the crossing naturally extends the trip.
More hikes for a longer stay
If you have four or five days and strong legs, the valley has more to give than Grunas and the Blue Eye. Serious walkers can take on Maja e Harapit — the sheer, pyramidal peak known as the "Matterhorn of Albania", a demanding full-day scramble — or hike up to the Peja Pass (Qafa e Pejës) for high-alpine views without committing to a full border crossing. See our best hikes in Theth and the Peja Pass guide to match a route to your fitness and time.
Going much longer — the Peaks of the Balkans
For trekkers with a week and a half to spare, Theth is a key overnight hub on the Peaks of the Balkans — the celebrated circular long-distance trail of roughly 168 km (originally ~192 km) over about ten days, looping across Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo. The Theth–Valbonë crossing is just one leg of it. It's a serious undertaking that needs a cross-border permit arranged in advance — see our permits guide — but for many hikers Theth is where the whole trip begins or ends.
What a three-day Theth trip looks like
To make the sweet spot concrete, here's how a relaxed three days (two nights) might run:
- Day 1 — get in and warm up. Take the ~07:00 furgon from Shkodër (from outside Hotel Rozafa, ~1,200 lek / €12), arrive in the valley by mid-morning, settle into a family bujtina, then walk the easy Grunas Waterfall trail in the afternoon (about 45 minutes each way).
- Day 2 — the Blue Eye. Give the day to the Blue Eye of Kaprre — drive or transfer to the Nderlysa trailhead (small parking fee, ~150–200 lek), then the 40–50-minute walk down to the vivid spring pool.
- Day 3 — the village and out. See the stone church and the Lock-in Tower in the morning, then catch the early-afternoon (~14:00) furgon back to Shkodër — carry cash in lek, as there are no ATMs in the valley.
Add a fourth day (and a night in Valbonë) and you can take on the Valbonë–Theth crossing over the pass.
How to decide
- First visit, want the highlights? 2–3 days (2 nights), for Grunas, the Blue Eye and the village.
- Here to hike the Valbona crossing? 3–4 days, often with a night in Valbonë too.
- Only passing through? At least one overnight — a day trip barely works given the road.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do you need in Theth?
Two to three days (two nights) is the sweet spot — enough for the village, Grunas Waterfall and the Blue Eye without rushing. Add a day or more for the Valbonë–Theth crossing over the Valbona Pass.
Is Theth worth it for one day?
Not really. Theth is a winding 2.5–3.5 hour drive from Shkodër, so a day trip is mostly travel. Plan at least one overnight to make the journey worthwhile.
How many days for the Valbona to Theth hike?
The crossing itself is a 6–8 hour day. Many hikers stay a night in Theth and a night in Valbonë, linking the two with the Koman Lake ferry, so allow three to four days overall.
What else is there to hike beyond Grunas and the Blue Eye?
For a longer stay, strong walkers can tackle Maja e Harapit — the "Matterhorn of Albania", a demanding full-day peak — or the Peja Pass for high views without a border crossing. The valley's full range is in our best-hikes guide.
Can you do the Peaks of the Balkans from Theth?
Yes — Theth is one of the main overnight hubs on the Peaks of the Balkans, the roughly 168 km, ten-day circular trail across Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo, of which the Theth–Valbonë crossing is a single leg. It needs a cross-border permit arranged in advance, so plan it well ahead.
